Beat Talk: Interview with rapper GHOST DOG

Check out our amazing interview with rising North Carolina emcee GHOST DOG!  In this interview Ghost Dog talks about his favorite producers, beats, and more!

Booking inquiries:  ghostdaronin@gmail.com
Twitter: @ghostdogmc
Facebook:  Ghost Dog MC

The Beat Yard:  How has everything been going for you Ghost Dog?Things have been movin' along....been having alot of fun running
support for my most recent album (Dreams of a Wandering Samurai) &
getting alot of good feedback; other than that just been relaxing,
working my day job, trying to expand my fanbase, & getting ready for
the upcoming tour season...

The Beat Yard:  Who are some of your favorite producers / beatmakers of all time?
Aw man....lemme see....Rza (his vintage ish as well as 4th Disciple &
some of the others from tha Wu camp), Pete Rock, Premier, Large
Professor, D.R.U.G.S. Beats on tha 'official' tip.....& Dr. G, L.
Jones, Sharp Cuts, Crafsmen, Poe Mack, & Manifest Beats on tha indie
scene....

The Beat Yard:  Who are some of the producers you have worked with?
L. Jones, Manifest Beats, Citero (<<< all 3 from my crew 1100
Hunters), Sharp Cuts (the other half of my side crew Phantom Blade),
Hattory Productions, Dr. G (outta Manchester, UK under Hell Razah's
Ghetto Government label), Finian St. Omer II aka Chaundon (under his
Gemstones label), Sampai (from Noveau Souffle outta France), Watkinz
Da General, G.I.C., D.R.U.G.S. Beats, Crafsmen, HD Productions (an ILL
female producer outta NC), Introspective Minds, D F L N (RIP to tha
homie) & a slew of others over the years...

The Beat Yard:  What producers would you like to work with in the future?
Maaaaan to rock over a Pete Rock, Primo, or Large Pro joint (or Rza on
some vintage Wu ish) would be a bucket-list moment.

The Beat Yard:  What type of beats bring out the best in what you do?
While I do have roots in that grimy boom-bap....& joints with Eastern
influence, I am pretty adaptable & can say that I have an ear for
generally whatever type of vibe fits the specific part or concept of a
project I'm working on (& at times the beat even plants the seed for a
concept...).  Maybe I'm droppin' some life jewels & a heartfelt beat
might speak to me that doesn't fit into any vibe I've rocked to
before.  I don't like to limit myself, but like to think moreso about
what the album needs in the moment.

The Beat Yard:  What type of sounds do you like hearing in beats?
If I had to pick a couple I tend to gravitate to, I'd say flutes &
pianos, but I also like some grimy keys & have my horn
moments.....also a sucker for a well-done video game/anime sample.
Bottom line; if it's dope, it's dope.  I have a wide range of tastes.

The Beat Yard:  Do you buy beats from producers you like and how can any producer
reading this article get in touch with you for beats?
I do indeed support producers (as long as the price is reasonable or
they're willing to work with me; I don't have a label backing me so
there is definitely a budget...)  I can be reached at
ghostdaronin@gmail.com for anyone interested in buildin...

The Beat Yard:  How would you describe the overall production style and feel of
your current release Dreams of a Wandering Samurai?
There are a variety of sounds on 'Dreams'.....from broken-beat to
straight-up-swordsmen style to urgent to anthem to abstract &
everything in between. I strongly believe in crafting an organic
album....that's just the era I come from; where it was more than just
a collection of songs.  Things either connect in concept,
thematically, directly, or from the way the vibes of production flow
into each other.  As such, it tends to be a rollercoaster of emotions
I try to take it through in a project.

The Beat Yard: Have you ever rapped over a particular beat you weren't feeling too
much, but eventually ended up liking the finish product once the song
was complete?
Not so much, but I can say that I have stepped outside of my comfort
zone quite a bit....something I tend to do from time to time to push
myself creatively.  Not for the sake of doing it; & the beat still has
to talk to me on some level.  Case-in-point; I am NOT a speed rapper,
but have developed the ability to an extent in the last few
years....so I may end up on a beat that has a waaaaaay slower BPM than
I used to be capable of spittin on every now & then...

The Beat Yard: Is there anything else you would like to mention in this interview
that we haven't touched already?
Once again, my name is Ghost Dog & my most recent solo project is
'Dreams of a Wandering Samurai'.  I am also one half of a duo that
goes by the name 'Phantom Blade' & our last project is called 'The
Barber's Chair EP'.  You can find my music online at ALL major (&
minor) digital sites under 'ghost dog mc' or 'phantom blade'.  Look up
the music (I have a good 5-6 projects out); & you can also show
support by subscribing to my Patreon page
(www.patreon.com/ghostdogmc).  Shouts to my 1100 Hunters fam, my
Phantom Blade brethren Sharp Cuts, my Cypher UniverCity fam, & all my
friends, family, & supporters....big ups to The Beat Yard for this
opportunity!!!

SOJU (Beat Yard Spotlight)

Soju consists of JFD from Virginia and JeHall from Arkansas. The 2 US Army soldiers are 2 of the founding members of Yeah Boi Music Group.
The duo released an album on iTunes “AWOL or Another Way Of Living” and also a  mixtape “TMOM or The minds of Maniacts.” they are currently working on their next project  “SojuDemonz”.
Perfecting  one of the singles called “MUMBLE” is their current focus, with that song they are taking shots at this new era of music. In addition to that they are working on a video to their latest single “Goin Crazy.”
-We are just to people who don’t care about anyones critics and criticism because we are gonna say what we want and do what we want when it comes to music the duo explained.
-JFD grew up listening to PAC, Em, WU Tang, Lloyd Banks etc
-JeHallYal grew up listening to Ludacris, Z-ro, Trea The Truth,  Chamillionaire etc..
Yeah Boi Music Group, LLC. (YBMG) is an independent record label that originated in Camp Humphreys, South Korea among service members. Initially, the music that was put together was simply for the love of music. As their following grew and the demand for their music increased they realized their talent and decided to take their music to the next level for their fans. This label has the recipe for success.
Beginning with eight service members and a few civilians, the artist roster was a large one. As time passed and duty stations changed, people were replaced or went on their own paths leaving authentic lyricist J.F.D., short for Jason “Fucking” Doxey and his counterpart, the inventive Je Hall, a lyrical duo who together form the group SoJu. These guys are driven and focused and destined for succeeds.

SIMBA (Spotlight)

Simba was born and raised in Kingston Jamaica, he comes from a poor family who didn't have much. He fell into using music as an escape from the everyday struggles. "Growing up in a one bedroom house in Jamaica with six family members I didn't have much, even food was hard to come by". Simba and his family later moved to Mount Vernon, York in hopes of more opportunities. It was then he discovered the hip-hop culture and fell in love with it. His inspirations are 2Pac, Rakim, Biggie, Nas and Jay-z. "No disrespect to Jay or Big, but I want to be better than them.

Life and earning money in Mount Vernon was always hard, the city is
plagued by gang violence, murder, and robbery. You could hardly walk
down the street without hearing gun shots or seeing a fight ever so
often. Simba's song "Susie's Story" depicts the cruelty and horror of
such gang violence. Simba says that growing up in a town filled with
struggles makes him work harder. "This town made me who I am, I am
proud to say I am from Mount Vernon. " Simba has been able to use the power of words to connect and cultivate the minds of his listeners.

Simba has been doing music for years, realizing that music is his true passion he started to perfect his craft in his teen years. Simba has grown a rapid fan base amongst his listeners. Singles such as "Pen
Game" and "Want it All" have gotten him more than 30,000+plays on
SoundCloud, and a following of over 20,000 on soical media outlets.
He's done multiple performances throughout his musical journey. His
most notable are his appearances on Coast2Coast and SOB'S Success
Sundays. Simba's main motivations are his family and his fans. In the
future he sees himself being at the top of the charts.

Simba's music is very versatile, his story telling, rapid pace, and
sheer essence on his tracks captivate his audience. I think the worled is in for something great, from a great artist named Simba.

Hip hop producer and Author Rory Bressler releases a book that chronicles his personal journey of cheating death and turning tragedy into triumph, "A Story of Struggle".

SYNOPSIS
Spiritual Awakening. After seeing the heaven's gates, my spiritual side of me, came from deep inside of me. Me and the Lord, came together and the fight that I've been battling, for 15 years, was finally over because I finally see the light. I knew the Word of God was true , and this is something I will never forget. I seen my self die, and come back to life. To me, it was very scary. I'd never been that scared in my whole life, and I've seen a lot happen, so I hope my story really reaches out to people who have struggled, in any type of way. All these 34 years of my life, dealing with the struggles I've been dealing with, my whole life. I've always asked my self, "Why do I have to deal with all this pain?" That's when I have to pray to the Lord, and ask Him, and He answers in His own way. Goals I have in the next five years; Goals I have, is to tell my story and reach out to 1.5 million people and change lives, see the change in peoples eyes. Become a better man, and be the best father in the world. To show the world, nothing can stop me from living, that only God can judge me. Pray to eat better and gain weight, keep going with my music. "Rory, has been doing music for 13 years, and I've had dreams of helping others, and never gave up, he wants to teach kids to never give up on there dreams, no matter what comes there way in life."
