Beat Talk: Interview with R&B singer Nikia

R&B singer Nikia stops by and kicks it with us at The Beat Yard to talk about her new single "The Drug Song" and her forthcoming album She Is Me!  Read all about what she has to say here in this one on one interview.

The Beat Yard:  What's up Miss Nikia?

Nikia:  Hey I'm good... no I'm great!

The Beat Yard:  You have a single out called "The Drug Song" could you tell the readers a little about that?

Nikia:  "The Drug Song" is about someone being addicted to someone's love you know just needing that love to survive.  

The Beat Yard:  Who produced the single "The Drug Song" and how did you connect with the producer for the song?

Nikia:  The song was produced by Shawn keys.  It's funny the song was an accident, he's a great producer he brings out the creativity in you.

The Beat Yard:  Have you worked with this producer before?

Nikia:  With producer before on other songs which you will see on my album She is Me early next year

The Beat Yard:  What producers have you worked with in the past?

Nikia:  Producers I've worked with Gregory Fields Jr.,  Zoid Chords, Bobby Sticks, Jaye Swift, Johnny Wilson, Marty Debarge, Kimo Kaulani to name a few.

The Beat Yard:  What producers would you like to work with in the future?

Nikia:  This is easy I would love to work with Corner Boys, Tank, Timberland, The Dream, DJ Khaled, to name a few

The Beat Yard:  What types of beats, instrumentals, compositions, etc. bring out the best in what you do?

Nikia:  I love a good ballad to be honest a song with a good story to tell.

The Beat Yard:  What sounds or instruments do you like to hear in beats?

Nikia:  I love to hear a good base line, strings, and piano however I do Like different exotic sounds.

The Beat Yard: What is your method for writing a song, do you write to the beat or do you write lyrics and try to find the right piece of music to go with it?

Nikia:  I can really do it either way but I like to be very creative without restrictions so I usually tend to write a song and then compose around it however I can write to music.

The Beat Yard:  Do you assist with the composition or producing of the music?

Nikia:  I most certainly do I like to be involved in the whole process I am nosy (laughs).

The Beat Yard:  Do you prefer the producer to be hands on with you, or do you like to work at your own pace?

Nikia:  I like when the producer is hands on.  I love a good push and a big challenge.

The Beat Yard:  Do you buy beats from producers and beat makers?

Nikia:  I will if its something I really love however I like the live composition better.

The Beat Yard:  How can producers or beatmakers go about submitting beats to you?

Mono Bagends:  Life is great and full of blessings.  Just trying to enjoy everyday and make God proud of me.

The Beat Yard:  How hot is it in New York right now?

Mono Bagends:   In the 90's or high 80's

The Beat Yard:  Lets talk about the Beats on your latest project "Get Fly Summer", how is the production on this EP?

Mono Bagends:   It's dope...every track is a banger. Mostly fast paced club music.

The Beat Yard:  What producers did you work with for the project?

Mono Bagends:   D-Sharp, T-Weezy, Roc1, Luis Hazlip Jr and Sho-Down.

The Beat Yard:  What would you say the best beat on the EP is?

Mono Bagends:  Right Now and Get Sexy For Me are my favorites but all of them are cool.

The Beat Yard:  Would you say that you have a good ear for beats?

Mono Bagends:   Exceptional....its something I take pride in. 

The Beat Yard:  Do you have a particular method for selecting the tracks you end up using?

Mono Bagends:   Not really. Most of the time I'm not looking for anything in particular...when producers ask me I tell them I'll know when I hear it. They will play me a bunch of tracks and I pick out what I want.

The Beat Yard:   Is the clothing line, Get Fly Summer a reflection of the actual EP?

Mono Bagends:  Yes in a way. It wasn't planned that way but I had all these summer time feel good fun songs and the clothing line opportunity fell into my lap so it made sense to do it. I hooked up with Merch Direct to make the clothing line happen.

The Beat Yard:  What makes the Get Fly Summer apparel so fly?

Mono Bagends:  Its cool looking tanks and t-shirts. It represents that you are enjoying your summer and making the most out of it. That's what everyone wants to do for the summer....they want to GET FLY.

The Beat Yard:  What's up Shys Debiocci?  

Shys Debiocci:  Hard work and my eye lids.  lol.  Real talk.

The Beat Yard: You have two hot singles out right now....  "Twerk" and "My City" how would you describe the beats on those two singles?

Shys Debiocci:  The beat on "My City" is like a guddah street banger.  Like when you hear it, it makes you wanna get live (turn up).  Make you wanna shake yo dreads, yo head, whatever street hyper.  Twerk is what it is a "Booty Shaking", sweat it out beat.  It's no way you can hear that beat and not wanna dance.  I swear you got fellas feeling it.  I know some dudes that came up with a dance with some females, and it's a player dance I didn't even know it could be converted, but you gotta see it.  They are not dancing nowhere close to a female, it's just how fellas kill the beat.

The Beat Yard: What type of beats bring out the best in you as an artist?

Shys Debiocci:  I mean of course I can get off on any beat, but I like those beats like Meek Mills, Lil' Wayne, Rick Ross, Dipset.  They got Jada and DMX type beats, ether type beats.  Them hard joints!  I murda them beats real talk.

The Beat Yard:   Who are some of the producers you've worked with so far?

Shys Debiocci:  As of now just one producer and that's Baby Breeze Productions.  He's a guerrilla with the beats.... true story! 

The Beat Yard:  Who are some producers you would like to work with in the future?

Shys Debiocci:  Some producers I would like to work with, Dr. Dre, Mannie Fresh, The Runnas, Cool and Dre, Swizz Beats, Kanye and many more.

The Beat Yard:  What are 4 of your favorite beats / instrumentals?

Shys Debiocci:  4 of my favorite instrumentals are Nas "Ether", that's a MONSTA beat.  Umm Jay-Z "Dynasty" intro beat.  Jay-Z's "Renegade" beat is retarded, and Lil' Wayne intro freestyle on The Carter 2 is sick!

The Beat Yard:  How can beatmakers/ producers go about getting in touch with you for submitting beats?

The Beat Yard:  Do you buy beats from up and coming producers?

Shys Debiocci:  I would support up and coming producers, but what they have to realize is I had to pass out songs and sell CDs for $3-$5 to get known.  You can't come out with outrageous prices and you don't have the rank yet, you gotta build.  Sometimes you gotta build friendships.  Give 1 or 2 beats and gain forever loyal-ness.  It'll come back to you sometimes you gotta get your name out there 1st.  Giving me a beat, you become known because of my fan base and deals I got lined up, and shout out my people every interview.

The Beat Yard:  Do you have a process for selecting beats?

Shys Debiocci:  Do I have a process for selecting beats?  I mean, not really.  I sometimes get one made to an idea I already gave in mind, or just listening to the beats and seeing what catches my ears.  I write stuff in my head, just listening to a beat, and it depends in my mood if I feel beastly, I get a gudda go hard beat.  If I'm laid back that's what I look for.

The Beat Yard: Is there anything else you would like to plug or mention in this interview?

Beat Talk: Coach Real (Rising King of New York Hip Hop)

Rising New York based indie hip hop recording artist Coach Real sits down and talks to us here at The Beat Yard about the types of beats he likes to rock to, the producers he would like to build with and more!  Check out what he has to say here in this one on one interview.



The Beat Yard:  How has 2014 been for you so far?
Coach Real:  2014 has been very good so far.  I'm putting a lot of things together for a very successful fiscal year.

The Beat Yard:  What beats bring out the best in what you do?

Coach Real:  I wouldn't say there is a certain type of beat that brings  out my best.  I will say I dislike Southern style beats with a passion and honestly I make beats hot, they don't make me.

The Beat Yard:  What producers have you worked with so far?

Coach Real:  Stephen Farr for feta productions the Grammy award winning team The Writers Block and Eque the imperial, and I'm expecting some material from Adam Deitch from break science and hopefully Cinemax from death house.

The Beat Yard:  What producers would you like to work with in the future?

Coach Real:  DJ Premier,  Timbaland, Pete Rock, Harry Fraud, The RZA, and most of all aarabMuzik.

The Beat Yard:  Who are some of your favorite producers?

Coach Real:  I would have to say my favorite producer I have not worked with yet is AarabMuzik his sound is crazy and for me it defines New York city street hip hop.  It's almost like a calling card for the hood and then Adam Deitch from break science.  Now Adam is family from way back.  I have known Adam since 1997 when I was in the Under World Secret Service.  I actually performed with Adam at s.o.b.'s and he is a true hip hop fan and he produced "My Gun Goes off" on 50 Cent's Curtis album plus Adam Deitch and Borahm lee is  BREAK SCIENCE so I can't wait to hop on some of there dub step beats and make history.  Now for producers I have worked with I would have to say Cinemax and then my current producer Stephen Farr.  Cinemax is my very first producer he is the one that taught me what 16 bars is and how to count bars and BPM's.   Cinemax is the one that turned me into a professional recording artist took me from a 4 track Akai board to working on ssl boards in Premier's studio formerly known as Quad Studio.  Also Michael Jacksons studio room in Sony studios which NO ARTIST ON EARTH HAS EVER RECORDED IN EXCEPT FOR US THE UNDER WORLD SECRET SERVICE.  He helped me develop my craft and style from a rookie so he knows my sound and how I rhyme and what I like so hopefully I can get him on this album it would be a needed bonus.  Then you have Stephen Farr, for feta productions aka MR FARR he is another guy I have known for a long time and he has worked with another family member of mines CX so he also knows how I ride the beat and what I need to move forward he came into the picture right when I started my promo campaign and we linked up and he knew coach real as a rookie, but once he got a hold of Coach Real the vet it was a whole different ball game Mr. Farr and I have a vision of music that I promise you will change the face of hip hop as we know it we already have done something that has never been done on the record "THE SERMON" he literally put a sermon in the middle of the record and it sounds crazy and I look forward to finishing my album with Mr. Farr so we can move to the next level on something even newer and fresher.

The Beat Yard:  Do you buy beats?

Coach Real:  So far no I have not purchased any beats.  I think right now its more beneficial for producers to either front me the beat and we work something out if it sells or we can do something on the back end either way anything can be worked out I just don't think its smart for me as a independent to purchase beats that you don't know how well the beat is going to do air play wise or if you can sell the record you use the beat for.  So its just smarter for both parties.  It's smart for them because I'm the #1 rated rapper in the world according to Reverbnation and I do massive numbers when I release music which in turn gets there name out there as a producer or production team and it also gives me the opportunity to see how my fan base responds to me on whatever beat it is I'm using.

The Beat Yard:  Do you like it more when a producer is hands on with you in creating a song, or would you prefer them to send beats and you work on your own?

Coach Real:  I like when me and the producer work together on the track its self the beat and maybe the hook because when making a record its about bringing two visions together my vision and the producers and making them blend together for one vision is key and some times a producer can have a beat that i have a vision for and he can just email it to me and i will body it at the end of the day its always the rapper and the beat.

The Beat Yard:  What's next for Coach Real when it comes to what types of beats and production we can expect to hear you on in the future?

Coach Real:  There is no such thing as a certain  type of beat or sound to expect to hear me on my flow and delivery allows me to hop on anything and make it a hit but i will say this new dub step/hip hop sound is next up for me to flip and who knows I might get Kid Rock to make me something.  I'm far out there like that you can never tell with me my creativity has no bounds.
